I know it’s shocking, but vegetarians can barbeque. The outdoor grill can be used to grill more than just meat.
Why this post? I shared my excitement at finding really good vegetarian barbeque recipes in the local journal while having breakfast in a restaurant on Facebook.
I shared my excitement at finding really good vegetarian barbeque recipes in the local journal while having breakfast in a restaurant on my private Facebook account and got immediate and passionate criticism from family and friends. Most reacted as if I was committing a crime and went on the attack to tell me off. I was taken by surprise. They seemed insulted that I, as a vegetarian of over 20 years, may want to have a barbequed meal.
This will always fascinate me. Why does it bother people so much that I don’t eat meat? How are vegetarian meals any weirder than eating the ground up body parts of animals? I like vegetarian food, you are more omnivorous or a meat lover and that perfectly fine. Why is it okay for you to get excited about a good recipe, but not me?
My husband actually had to speak with a few of the more angered individuals reminding them that my sharing a recipe wasn’t a moralistic post, or an attempt to convert anyone, I was just excited at seeing something good that I could enjoy this summer. I didn’t raise my kid vegetarian, so believe me when I tell you, my eating preference is just that, a preference, not a political agenda.
