Women’s sports constantly take the back burner to men’s sports. Women ‘s sport doesn’t get as much attention from the mainstream media as their counterparts. Many media outlets believe that men’s sport is more exciting. Female athletes are being told repetitively that their sport and their talent is less than any male counterpart. Just recently, Serena Williams who had just won a tournament while pregnant was told by John McEnroe that she wouldn’t measure up against male athletes.
Reporter: “You’re one of the greatest female athletes of all time.” Serena Williams: “I prefer the words ‘one of the greatest athletes of all time.'”
Let me just say, I know a lot of female athletes who put male athletes to shame. We’ve also seen them on television on the occasions when they do get media attention. Gender doesn’t define how much of a bad ass you can be.
I spoke to a friend who plays in an amateur hockey league and this is what he had to say about mixed teams: “From my observations, they are treated as equals and some of them are kick ass tough as nails. Let girls and women play as much as they want to. Period.”
