Privilege and Entitlement
Privileged is the idea that some people in society are advantaged over others. Privilege is often invisible from the inside. It’s difficult to see a system designed to benefit you when it’s all-encompassing.
Because whiteness is viewed as the “default,” white people have the privilege of distancing themselves from the concept of race or denying it altogether.
Imagine being so privileged and entitled that you felt it necessary to hurt or kill someone.
A woman in New York hit a man with her umbrella because she hates Chinese people. I was hit by an umbrella to a few years back while in a wheelchair at the hospital because the older lady hated filthy natives. What gives you such entitlement to make you think it’s okay to attack someone simply because you don’t like their race?
Teenage boys deciding that a girl Snapchatting with them was annoying decided to kill her. “I just didn’t want anything to do with Snapchatting her anymore.” – one of the 16-year-old who planned her murder. How entitled do you have to be to take a life because you don’t want to SnapChat with them?! What happened to…” I don’t want to be friends with you anymore”. Luckily she didn’t die from the gunshot to the head, but she will live with physical and mental scars for the rest of her life.
What would happen if we embraced each other with all of our cultural differences and unite for the good of all?
