I feel sympathy for the challenging task of trying to carve out a life for yourselves in this disaster of a planet we are leaving you. I wish things were different. It is the hope of all parents to leave the world, a life that is better for their children. I have fought for this since my teenage years and will continue to do so until my last breath.
No generation before you has ever entered the world in which the rate of technological change has been anywhere near so rapid. That is a fundamental change for everyone. Things are changing so rapidly that is nearly impossible to even know what to learn since so much of what we learn now becomes obsolete almost overnight.
It is also a time where information is more easily accessible and the truth is harder to hide. I hope we will be able to use these tools to make a true change for the generation that hasn’t arrived yet.
I apologise to all of the next generation for failing to do more, for the things that were done to the planet and for the society they live in. We have so much growing up to do. I hope I can still help in some way to improve the world you are inheriting from us.
“Love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic and we’ll change the world.” – NDP Leader Jack Layton
