What do you think when you look at yourself in the mirror?
I’ll be honest, it’s been a while since I’ve really looked at myself in any mirror. Since I struggle with health issues, I’ve gained weight, I look tired more often than not, etc. It makes it difficult to have a positive body image or be confident of one’s look. It doesn’t matter how often my husband tells me how beautiful or attractive I am, I have trouble digesting those words.
Focusing on what is wrong or zeroing in on imperfections creates a downward spiral of negative thinking that can affect your overall outlook. Feeling bad about one’s body, often translate into feeling bad about one self in general. Feeling bad about one self, in general, makes us depressed. Depression doesn’t help anyone feel better about themselves. It’s a negative downward spiral.
Valuing your body in the present creates a positive mindset and keeps negative thoughts and feelings at bay. Focusing on one’s positive attributes increases body confidence and improves body image satisfaction.
