Religion & Gender

Too many religions have a negative view of women or a simple lack of recognition and respect.

In the Corinthians, it states that any man having characteristics regarded as typical of a woman, will not be accepted in heaven. If you put aside the idea that looking feminine is a sin, that then raises the question of what effeminate clothing entails, since this defers per cultures and historical context, what is considered feminine/masculine changes and is different across the globe and time periods? Gendered clothing is a construct and total bullshit.

As for women, why bother trying to be good if your very best will never be good enough?

“Do not be deceived… no effeminate person will inherit the kingdome of God.” – 1 Corinthians 6:9-10

Too many religious doctrines support the abuse and subjugation of women and girls.

  • Baptist Church officials told a teenage girl who was raped by the pastor that she couldn’t return to church until she apologized to the pastor’s wife.
  • Catholic Archbishop says domestic violence caused by women not obeying men. He said women should simply obey their husband and not ask for a divorce if they don’t want to be hit.
  • In Nepal, a 3-year-old little girl from a Hindu and Buddhist community was named “living goddess”, a “Kumari” (virgin) and locked away against her will until puberty only permitted to come out of isolation for religious ceremonies. This is a tradition that has been perpetuated for 3 centuries despite the alarms of the organizations protecting children’s rights.

“This religion and the bible require of women everything and give her nothing. They ask her support and her love and repay her with contempt and oppression.” – Helen H. Gardener. Men, Women and Gods

This could have changed, evolved with time, but it hasn’t. Too many still insist on their medieval views.

“The truth is those male religious leaders have had and still have an option to interpret holy teachings either to exalt or subjugate women. They have, for their own selfish ends, overwhelmingly chosen the latter. Their continuing choice provides the foundation or justification for much of the pervasive persecution and abuse of women through the world.” – Jimmy Carter

Too often, men of the cloth, blame women for the sin of men.

For example, one of the Catholic Church’s high-ranking clerics, Cardinal Raymond Burke, claimed women are the root cause of the paedophilia epidemic among priests.  You know, because women steal all good manly man for themselves. Plus men don’t want to join the church anymore because women can do it better and they don’t like it.

“There you go again girls, breaking into places where you don’t belong and doing a better job at it. Have you no shame?” – Neon Nettle with contercurrentnews.info

If you’re a woman, the “Biblical Perspective” will never be in your best interest. Run, don’t walk, away from this crap.

Too often religion is used to discriminate against others, even when the church itself takes the stance of acceptance and respect. For example, British Christian parents pulled their child from school because they heard that a student attending the same school started wearing dresses.  They disagreed with gender fluidity and didn’t want their child exposed to such behaviour. They used their religion as an excuse, even if the school itself is a religious school and have issued a statement stating that the Diocese of Portsmouth respect diversity of all kinds.
