As announced by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) last June, starting December 1st, 2017, all cell phone sold in Canada have to be unlocked and suppliers will have to unlock phones free of charge for clients who request it.
This news makes me really happy. Until recently, phones sold by vendors were locked. this means that the cell phone only worked on their networks. For example, a phone purchased from Bell could only operate on Bell’s network. To unlock it, you had to pay about $ 50. This is true of all providers.
I have paid that fee more than once. Even though you purchased the phone and it is yours, you can’t sell or give it to someone else who is another provider or change providers yourself. You had to unlock your phone which was expensive.
