The thyroid regulates the growth metabolism of the nervous system and the metabolic rate of many cells.
During the hyperthyroidism state, the muscle tissues can’t regenerate fast enough and begin to break down. There’s also some research that indicates the high levels of thyroid hormones attack the muscles directly. This means that muscle weakness, cramps and pains are very common symptoms of Graves’s Disease.
Many people have found relief from the muscle pains and weakness with acupuncture therapy along with a low impact exercise routine to help rebuild the muscles. Personally, I am now at the stage where I am starting low impact exercise to rebuild the muscles. It’s a slow process. You have to be careful not to overdo it as it may cause more harm than good.
Once the thyroid is treated the healing can begin. How long it takes depends on the severity of symptoms and how long a person suffered before receiving treatment.
