There is a lot of prejudice when it comes to addicts. Understanding addiction is crucial to bring about change.
Many people who overdose begin with a legitimate injury or simply do not understand the potency and deadly nature of these medications.
Medication can be life-changing or life-saving for some people who are depressed, and it’s important to point that out.
It’s also important to understand that patients aren’t prescribing their own pain management medications. As it is, most chronic pain patients are now experiencing a lot of shaming by their current physicians. If it isn’t difficult enough to have an invisible illness, now the government is admonishing and punishing patients for taking what was prescribed and getting addicted. It’s very insensitive.
I hate that there is such a stigma that has gotten worse now that this government has decided to jump on the bandwagon. Without understanding addiction the problem will only get worse.
