May 3rd is World Press Freedom Day.
Press freedom is very important. Independent reporters do important and difficult work. Sometimes they risk their lives and their freedom to tell their stories.
In a world of propaganda and false news, I value quality journalism and try to seek out the most unbiased news sources I can find.
Reporters are being sentenced to prison in Vietnam for doing their jobs and that is not okay. This includes a blogger that was sentenced to 7 years in prison for writing about a chemical spill.
Reporters in the United States have been beaten, arrested, charged with crimes and received death threats. Reporters at Standing Rock were arrested too. Thankfully they weren’t sentenced to jail.
This happens in too many places.
Truth and facts are important to me, and I call falsehood out wherever I see it. Press freedom is something to fight for.
I am happy I do not currently live in an area that arrest reporters and bloggers for speaking the truth.
