International Albinism Awareness Day

June 13th is the International Albinism Awareness Day.

Albinism is a gene that can be found both in animals and in human beings.  It’s a gene and it’s hereditary. It’s a lack of pigment in hair, skin and eyes. You also get nystagmus which is constant movement of the eyes, similar to a tremor.

Children get teased. People stare and comment. Think about how hurtful that must be. Everyone deserves to be safe and respected.

For someone who is African American or any race that is dark to be born with Albinism is especially difficult as many will make them feel that they are not allowed to identify with their cultural background.

In some countries people with albinism arent’ safe. It is absolutely terrible what people do in certain countries. In Tanzania, for example, there are witch doctors that believe if you mutilate the limbs of individuals with albinism that they’re good luck charms.

We are all different and it’s okay.

I love hearing from you!
