School needs to change

Schools are supposed to teach kids how to think for themselves, not what to think.

In French class, the kids were asked to read a text and answer questions regarding the short story. One of the questions, was: “What part of the story did you prefer?” My kid answered that she didn’t particularly appreciate this story and gave an example why. She got a failing mark for that question and the teacher asked her to correct her mistake. She even told my child what part of the story she was supposed to like the most. My kid argued that the question was about her personal opinion and all opinion should be good. The school refused to accept my child’s answer. In this instant, I feel that the school failed to teach my child how to think for herself, but was adamant about teaching what to think.

Things we should have learned in High School

Budgeting

There should be a class “Budgeting Basics for Young Adults” to prepare the next generation to the harsh realities of finances once they leave the family nest.

I went from living with my parents to being a spouse and step mother of two wonderful boys in the blink of an eye. It was quite a life change. The first time I got a bill, I burst into tears because I didn’t have the money in my account. My spouse at the time who had been living on his own for quite a bit calm me down that reminded me that I had 30 days to pay the bill and I would get a paycheck before then.

Cooking

Well, there was a home economics class in the first year of high school which was supposed to teach us one recipe (not barely enough) and the teacher gave us all food poisoning because she had brought in white carrots from her trip to Mexico (which is not legal) to cook in our soup.

The purpose of the school home economic class was supposed to provide children with skills and knowledge that will benefit them, and the community as they moved into the world as young adults. I can tell you that it failed miserably.

Employment Rights
Employment rights should be thought in high school as the students are starting their first part-time and summer jobs. There are still many employers who will take advantage of their younger employees as they are less likely to know their rights.

For example, one of my first jobs was as a waitress. That adventure did not last long. A client thought it would be funny to snap my bras. Keep in mind that he was an adult and I was a teenager. I had a jug of beer in my hand at the time. Without thinking I turned around and emptied the content on the man’s head. I was fired on the spot. Only many years later did someone tells me I could have gone after the employee as it is illegal to fire someone for defending themselves from sexual harassment while on the job.

First Aid

Knowing what to do when an emergency situation happens shouldn’t be optional. Everyone should have the training right from high school. The world would be a much safer place if everyone knew the basics necessary to save a life.

Insurance

Too often we see in the news when tragedy strikes that people losing everything because they didn’t have insurance and they are caught by surprise. The value of having insurance should be thought in class. The basics about renter’s insurance, auto insurance, life insurance should be explained.

The educational system would work better if every school year had a practical course that applied the theory to do something regular people do in real life, something they can see will help them in life.
