Tarana Burke – Activist

Tarana Burke is the creator of the #metoo campaign. Burke created it back in 1997 because she’s a survivor of sexual violence and she wanted to create a safe place for survivors and people who truly empathize to support each other. It is an important campaign because women have been suffering in silence for way too long. I know, because I was one of them.

Her own daughter is a survivor of sexual violence. As a mother and a gang rape attempt survivor, that is my worst nightmare. I do not want my child to go through what I went through.

Almost a decade after it’s creation the #metoo campaign became viral when Alyssa Milano in October 2017 asked victims to come forward and tell their story so that society could realize how widespread the issue of sexual violence was. Sexual assault survivors will continue to come forward. Thanks to the #metoo campaign they are going to continue to tell these stories and not be silenced.

This is awesome and inspiring, and only the first step toward dismantling systemic rape culture and creating a culture of consent. To ultimately success, society needs stand with survivors and hold those accountable for their abuses of power.

Tarana Burke is now the Senior Director of Program for the Girls for Gender Equity organisation.
