In 1991, movie director Luc Besson, who was then 32 years old, met and eventually married model Maïwenn Le Besco when she was only 15. If this isn’t child marriage and paedophilia, I don’t know what is.
My oldest step-child is 15 and I wouldn’t let her get married no matter how in love she might feel. I certainly would jump out of my skin and press paedophilia charges against any 32 year old roaming around my kid. What would you do if that was your daughter?
What is the legal age in Canada?
The legal minimum age of marriage in Canada is 16 years. This is according to the 2005 Civil Marriage Act and the 2015 Criminal Code. What we need to understand is that marriage is governed by the provinces and territories not by federal law. Most provinces allow those as young as 16 to be joined in matrimony if they have their parents’ permission. This includes Saskatchewan, Ontario, British Columbia, Nova Scotia and Nunavut. In the Yukon, 15 year old can get married with parental consent.
I find it fascinating that we are okay with children marrying before they can legally vote. We are more protective of who can have a say about our country’s future than our kid’s lives.
Marrying children inspiring? Really?!
Their relationship inspired his movie Léon: The Professional in 1994, which depicted the story of the emotional relationship between an adult man and a young girl.
This is not the only movie about an adult having a relationship with a minor. Some people even find these movies romantic. It’s not.
When will people react to these obvious care of paedophilia and do something about it?
