April 5th is walk to work day. I’m guessing that very little people can participate. It takes me anywhere between an hour to an hour and a half to get to work by car. It would be impossible to walk to and from work, even if I didn’t have any health issues.
I understand the spirit of the day. They realize that in today’s world, we are constantly rushing for time and walking is a luxury. Unfortunately, our sedentary lifestyle of driving and sitting actually harm our health. This is why I will honour this day, not by walking to work, but by walking on my lunch time. I realize I can only walk around the block due to my health issues, but that is better than nothing. I have to admit that I try to do this as often as possible during spring-summer-autumn months, but have a tendency to go into hibernation when snow makes an appearance.
Walking is good for your overall health. Expert says that walking for 30 minutes a day is a great way to improve and maintain your overall health. I can’t walk for half an hour, even on the best of days. That’s too much. If I push through the pain, I suddenly lose the use of my legs. This is why I have a wheelchair. Thankfully, my doctor has confirmed that even if you can’t do 30 minutes a day, even a little is good.
Walking increases your cardiovascular fitness (which means a better sex life!). It also strengthen bones, reduces body fat and boost muscle endurance. The fun part about walking is that it’s cheap. You don’t need to purchase any fancy equipment to practice it.
Remember that exercise doesn’t need to be vigorous in order to improve your health. Leisure walking or social walking is perfect. It’s low impact, which is good for those suffering from knee injuries.
