Yuri Gagarin, a Russian astronaut, was the first man in space on April 12th 1961. He made an hour and 48 minutes orbital flight in the Vostok 1 spacecraft. Can you imagine what it felt like to be the first human being to see the earth from orbit.
Valentina Tereshkova, a Russian astronaut, was the first woman in space on June 16, 1963. I am so happy to report that for once, it wasn’t decades after her male counterparts. It was her only trip in space. She passed the rest of her life promoting science and advocating in her birth country.
Marc Garneau was the first Canadian to go in space. He did so multiple time in 1984, 1996 and 2000.
