June 1st is Global Day for Parents. In 2012, the United Nations General Assembly declared the first ever Global Day of Parents. This day exist in honour of all parental units. There are so many different and beautiful families all around the world.
I’m a parent and a step-parent of three teenagers. I can tell you that parenting comes with a range of challenges that will push you to your limits, but most of us will say that it’s all worth it. If you are struggling, you are not alone and it’s okay. Children aren’t born with an instruction book and each one is unique.
One challenge is the family-work balance. It is not a luxury. It is a necessity. Yet, many workplace insist on being priority number one over everything else. Having a child with special needs and having a chronic illness myself, it means having a lot of medical appointment and family emergencies. In a perfect world, we would be able to manage both work and home with ease. This is not a perfect world. You are doing your best and that’s all that you can do.
“Friendly reminder that “doing your best” does not mean working yourself to the point of mental breakdown. ” – Unknown
This day is a good opportunity to share our experiences and our support. There is a lot of parental shaming out there. Instead of judging others for being different, how about we try helping each other out. It is easy to lay blame, to declare one method better than the other, but the truth is that none of us have all the answers and every kids is different with different needs.
