Self-acceptance is essential for your well-being

Self-acceptance is essential for your well-being. It’s important to learn to love the things that make us unique. Self-acceptance is about learning to love yourself. It’s about letting go of things you can not change and appreciating what makes you uniquely you. However, being comfortable in one’s own skin is not always easy.

Self-reflection and self-knowledge is key to start learning to love yourself both inside and out.

What makes you unique?

Thinking of things that make you special, different, unique is an excellent starting point. Ask yourself how these differences will help you in the future and how they add value to your life.

Focus on the positives

It’s important to not focus on things you can not change. Instead of obsessing over things you cannot change, welcome the aspects of your person that you love. Make a list of things you are good at and / or like to do. Practising these activities regularly can help you have more confidence in your skills and talents. Think of treating yourself kindly and turning your negative and self-critical thoughts into positive ones. Avoid being too demanding with yourself and compare yourself to others.

This is something I’m working on with my teenage daughter. It’s not easy at first. As human beings, it seems a lot easier to identify our faults than it is to identify our strengths. Keep at it. It will become easier with time.

Set objectives

Set some realistic goals for yourself, then make a plan that will allow you to reach them. Achievements, no matter how small, can also help you feel better about yourself. Think of rewarding yourself when you reach a goal!

Think of some activities you could do to spoil yourself and spend quality time with yourself like taking a hot bath, taking a walk in the nature, etc.. It is also important that you take care of yourself by having a good diet, sleeping enough and exercising regularly. Start small. Baby steps is all you need.

Self-acceptance is essential for your well-being. It doesn’t happen all on it’s own. It takes time and work. If this is something you are struggling with, I wish you the best of luck.
