Do I really need vaccinations for travel outside of Canada?

March break is coming up faster than we think. Many of us will be travelling outside of Canada and that means it’s time to get ready. Most of us know what to pack, to keep your documents safe, but what about protecting your health? Do we really need to think about vaccination or is it all a racket?

Do I really need vaccinations for travel outside of Canada?

The short answer is yes, you really need to think about vaccination. International travel can present serious health risks if you have not been appropriately immunized. We live in a global world, and diseases that were once on the way out in Canada are now popping up again.Recent Canadian measles outbreaks were brought into our country because of travel. This shows us that we need to keep our vaccines up to date until measles has been wiped out worldwide. That alone should be enough to make you run to a travel clinic. What is important to know is that some countries won’t let you in if you haven’t gotten the appropriate vaccination.

This is why you should always check what vaccinations requirements before travelling and consult a travel clinic several weeks prior to your departure. This will ensure that you are adequately protected and ready to travel.

Most of us do a little research on your destination to find the right hotel, the right touristic activities, to learn about tipping, we should also look at vaccination and how to avoid getting sick abroad. This will likely save you from any problems while travelling abroad.

Is tourism killing the environment?

Most people like to travel and go on vacation. I know I do, although I rarely get to do so because it’s also expensive. There are 1 billion tourist that visit other countries in the world every year. In this age of mass tourism, when more of us than ever are leaving home for more exciting climates.

Travel and the environmentUnfortunately, tourism often puts pressure on natural resources through over-consumption, often in places where resources are already scarce.

There are many things that put pressure on coral reefs. For example, 80% of the coral around the Maya bay has been destroyed, the result of millions of boats dropping anchor on it, tourists treading on and picking it, or poisoning by rubbish and sun-cream.

Knowing is half the battle. When researching your next travel destination, also research how you can help the environment.

World Tourism Day

September 27 is World Tourism Day.

Did you know that the most commonly forgotten item for travelers is their toothbrush? I always put that item as well as any other personal hygiene and sun protection in my carry one that way if they lose my baggage, I still have everything I need to survive while they are found. Often hotels markup these every day items because they know you can’t go without.

Another important thing that people often dismiss is vaccines. We live in a global world, and diseases that were once on the way out in Canada are now popping up again.Recent Canadian measles outbreaks were brought into our country because of travel. Also be mindful when you travel. Some attractions aren’t worth it especially when these attractions are animals.

Travel and rape shouldn’t go hand in hand

Is Canada’s Far North a playground for perverts?

Workers from the South take advantage of the distance and the distress to commit irreparable actions. Survey collected testimonials from Inuit women victims of sexual violence.

The leader of Manitoba’s northern First Nations is demanding action after explosive allegations came to light revealing decades of racism and sexual abuse of Indigenous women by hydro workers in the north.

Part of the issue is racism, the over sexualizaton of women, the lack of value we put on women’s safety which is showed by a  lack of consequences for the men.

Why is one of the first question when a women say she was raped about the clothes she was wearing? We are in 2018 and the body of the woman is still and always censored. Why ? Because it is sexualized unlike that of man.

“When women go through this, it’s a horrifying experience because your entire self-confidence just drains out of you.” – Gretchen Carlson

Feminism will only become redundant when injustice, inequity and inequality are adequately addressed.

Travelling? – Register online

New technology can make life a lot easier.

Registering online is probably the best way to save time at the airport. By registering online, which you can normally do it 24 hours before your flight, you will receive your boarding pass by e-mail or text message. There are also machines at the airport that will print your boarding pass without having to go in line. You will not have to go to the airline counter if you do not check baggage. Otherwise, all you have to do is go to the baggage counter.

Another advantage is that several companies allow you to select a seat free of charge only from registration. Whether you are more of the porthole or aisle type, it’s time to choose your place among those that have not already been booked by those who have paid.

The Vatican Museum

The Vatican Museum is both beautiful and absolutely heartbreaking.

Back in 2004, I visited the Vatican Museum. As an archaeology and art history student, I was suddenly surrounded every which way by the works of arts and the history I had studied. It’s beautiful. It’s educational. It’s highly uncomfortable as you walked among all of the priceless artefacts that have been stolen in the name of religion.

The museum contains one of the world’s largest collections of masterpieces of paintings, sculpture and other works of art collected by the popes through the centuries and by collected we mean stolen, pillaged, etc.

Museum curator: “These items aren’t for sale.”
Killmonger: “How do you think your ancestors got these? Did they pay a fair price, or did they take them, like they took everything else?”

As a Métis woman who has seen and felt the devastation of what men of the cloth can do when deciding to force religion upon the people, my heart broke as I thought of all the nations that were pillaged and all the people that lost their lives.

Memories of Disney World

disney-world-978132_1920You are never too old to love Disney. The magic simply continues to evolve as you get older.

There’s nothing like showing your favourite Disney movies to your child for the first time. It’s truly a wonder to see the reactions of your own children the first time they see a Disney movie.

The Disney trip that I took alone with my daughter after the divorce with her father was an uplifting experience. It’s a moment in time that will always stay close to my heart.

I proved to myself and everyone in my life that I was a successful independent person who did not only survive on her own but thrived. It was a very expensive that I wouldn’t be able to repeat at the moment, but it was such a wise decision to spend this amount of money on this once in a lifetime trip. You won’t remember most objects you purchased, but you’ll remember that you swam with sharks.

It really is a place filled with magic. In one week, my child and I took 9,000 pictures. There aren’t enough hours in the day to consume all of the Disney content.

I’ll remember having supper at Belle’s restaurant and trying not to giggle when the waiter tried to teach us French and the priceless face he made when my child replied to him in perfect French and then offered to teach him a couple more words.

I’ll also always remember when we got stuck in a water-slide because the two little boys who went before us were too light for the ride and it automatically shut down for security reasons. I have to say that the employees were very reassuring and quick to come to our rescue. We also got to see parts of the water park that visitors don’t usually see because of our misadventure.

make your stay completely magical.

I really want to go back now that I am getting remarried and go has a family of five.

Travel Wishlist

It’s winter. I don’t know where you are in the world right now, but I am surrounded by snow and freezing cold. It’s time to dream about faraway places I would love to see.

sleeping-89197_1920I have been lucky in my life to have the opportunity to travel and visit many countries (France, Greece, Italy, Malta, Mexico, Monaco, Spain, The United States and Vatican). I hold in my heart and memories each one of these special places.

The more you travel and explore the world, the more you want to see it, the more you want to share with the people you love. These are my top 5 places I would like to travel to in the future if finances ever permit it.

  1. I would like to return to Disney World in The United States with my new reconstructed family. I was lucky enough to go twice already. Once as a single mother with my child at a time when she was young enough to believe in the magic of Disney and old enough to remember. Once with my husband (then fiancée) when I was sent for work/training at one of the associated hotels. I would like to go back the 5 of us, especially after the Star Wars Resort is built.
  2. I would like to go to England. I studied English Litterature and archaeology. I have a special place in my heart for the history and the architecture. For example, I would love to see the medieval passageways of York, drink in a British pub that’s been there for generations, etc. I am also an enormous Doctor Who fan.
  3. I would like to visit Ireland. I have ancestry that comes from this country. I would love to see castles, pubs, green countrysides, etc.
  4. I would love to visit the ruins of Dunluce Castle perch atop a dramatic basalt crag, over an enchanting gatehouse to the Mermaid’s Cave. It is a site steeped in history and lore, love and tragedy.
  5. I would like to visit Germany. My husband has extended family living in that country. The architecture there is also incredibly beautiful. We looked into travelling to Germany for our honeymoon, but it was above our budget. Maybe one day.
  6. I would love to visit Tahiti, French Polynesia. To reside in one of those luxurious bungalows suspended over clear turquoise waters. To see lush vegetation and stunning waterfalls.

Where would you like to go?
